Deftones played Melanie at their own festival on 7 November, and the song comes from a record that was never finished.
Eros was in progress when Chi Cheng was badly hurt in a car accident in 2008. The band shelved it and made Diamond Eyes instead. Cheng died in 2013 and the album has never been released.
This is not the first time they have opened that drawer. Smile, another song from those sessions, turned up at the same festival in 2019. Melanie is a different piece of the same unfinished thing, which is the part that matters to anyone who has spent eighteen years waiting for the rest of it.
It sat twelfth in a twenty song set at Día De Los Deftones, after Rocket Skates and before i think about you all the time, with Change in the House of Flies and Around the Fur later on.
No release plans for Eros have been announced, and the band have said nothing about why this song and why now.
