Dying Fetus are reissuing four early releases on vinyl on 11 December, each in several new colour variants, through Relapse.

The four are Infatuation With Malevolence from 1995, Purification Through Violence from 1996, Killing On Adrenaline from 1998 and the Grotesque Impalement EP from 2000. That is the band's first five years, which is also the stretch their reputation was built in.

What makes this a business story rather than a housekeeping note is the second half of the announcement. Alongside the records there is new merchandise built around the artwork of each one, which means the sleeves are being treated as assets in their own right rather than as packaging.

Colour variants do the same job from the other direction. A listener who already owns Killing On Adrenaline has no reason to buy it again for the music, so the pressing itself has to be the reason, and multiple variants turn one catalogue entry into several purchases.

None of which is cynical at this distance. A death metal band from Maryland with a thirty year catalogue has a back half of its income that looks like this, and the records are genuinely hard to find on vinyl.
