Extinction A.D. have released Escape From L.I., which makes eight singles in eight months. It is out on the streaming platforms with a lyric video.
Rick Jimenez, who sings and plays guitar, put the song where it comes from. “Long Island has become such a cesspool for obnoxious attitudes and disgusting displays of hate and division,” he said. “I grew up here and was aware of this my whole life but over the past few years it’s gotten even more out of hand.” He described standing against it and telling a neighbour that hate is not acceptable as the point of the song.
It is the second song he has sung partly in Spanish. “I am still not fluent under any circumstance, but I am learning,” he said, describing the switching between the two languages and the Latin percussion under it as something that felt crazy on paper and right in practice.
The band formed in Medford, on Long Island, in 2013 out of This Is Hell, and has four albums. Jimenez and drummer Mike Sciulara have been there from the start, Ian Cimaglia joined on guitar in 2015 and Tom Wood on bass in 2018. Eight singles in eight months is a release schedule almost nobody in crossover keeps, and the other seven are all still up.
