Master Boot Record released Computer Metal today through Metal Blade, and the whole thing is streaming.

Ten tracks: Dot Matrix, Command Prompt, Plug And Play, Firmware, Socket 7, Boot Sector, Turbo Button, Voodoo2, CRT and Ctrl + Alt + Del. Anyone who built a PC in the late nineties can read that list as a shopping receipt, which is the joke and also the method.

The music is written in MIDI and played by software rather than people, which the announcement made clear months ago. It is the only project of its kind on a label this size, and Metal Blade have stuck with it through several albums.

Past forty minutes of it, closing on Ctrl + Alt + Del, which is the correct ending for a record named after a boot sector. The full stream went up with the release rather than after it.

What keeps this from being a novelty is that the writing is real: these are metal songs with structures and riffs, performed by a machine because that is the point rather than because nobody could play them.
