Master Boot Record have put out "PLUG AND PLAY" with a video and, alongside it, a playable game demo. The song is from the album written in MIDI, Computer Metal, which Metal Blade are releasing.
Shipping a game with a single is the sort of thing that reads as a gimmick until you remember what this project is. The whole conceit is an Italian musician writing metal for hardware synthesisers and tracker software, with the sleeve art, the song titles and the sound all pointing at machines from the early nineties. A playable demo is not a marketing add on here, it is the same idea in another medium.
There are no vocals and there never have been. What carries a song is the arrangement: harmonised leads where a singer would be, rhythm parts that behave like guitars without being guitars, and the structures of heavy metal held exactly, which is why it lands with a metal audience rather than a chiptune one.
Metal Blade signing a project with no band and no voice remains the odd part of the story, and three albums in it has stopped being a novelty signing.
