Mortemia have put out a version of the Pet Shop Boys' It's a Sin with Jane Odintsova of Imperial Age singing it. The song went to streaming on 9 October with a video the same day.
It is the thirteenth entry in The Cover Collab Sessions, a project built on one rule: every track is a reinterpretation and every track has a different guest voice. That is a format rather than an album, and it suits what Morten Veland actually does. He writes the arrangements and finds the singer; the band is him.
Choosing It's a Sin is less of a stretch than the pairing suggests. The original is a wall of synthesised choir and Catholic guilt, which is two of the three things gothic metal is built from, and the song has survived every treatment anybody has given it since 1987.
Veland came out of Tristania, which he founded, and then Sirenia, so the female lead voice over heavy arrangement is the sound he has spent thirty years on. Thirteen guests in, the project has become a map of who is currently singing in that style.
