Lost Society's Samy Elbanna Tells Young Bands Not to Wait To Be Found

Samy Elbanna was too young to play bars when Lost Society started, so he and his friends found a youth centre, made a festival in it and brought their friends along. He offered that as advice in a Chaoszine interview, and it is better than most of what musicians say on this subject.

"Don't wait for someone to find you. Be proactive and practice. Literally put in the hours," he said. "Especially now, everyone's looking for a shortcut, but you have to put in the work."

He traces it to a decision made at seven, followed by what he calls the little victories: finding a rehearsal place, meeting the others, writing a song. "I'm living proof that if you apply yourself and put in the hard work, it's going to pay off in one way or another."

The sharpest part is about the thing young bands are actually sold. "We're sold dreams of overnight success, but the downside is that when you're at the top, there's usually only one way to go, and that's down, unless you can maintain the momentum."

His last point is about honesty rather than effort. Make something you would listen to yourself, he says, and that you will still be proud of years later. He has also spoken this week about how little he controls the other band he sings for.
