Tommy Johansson has recorded Savatage's Hall Of The Mountain King, the title track of the 1987 album, which makes two public versions of that song inside a few months.
Johansson is the singer in Majestica and played guitar in Sabaton before that, and his covers channel has become a steady thing in its own right. Picking this one is not a soft choice. The song takes its melody from Grieg and its arrangement from Criss Oliva, and it asks a singer for a register most power metal vocalists avoid in public.
The other version came from the band themselves. Savatage played Wacken Open Air this year and the set was filmed properly, with Gutter Ballet, Edge Of Thorns and Hall Of The Mountain King among the songs now online.
They did it without Jon Oliva, who wrote most of it, and the rock opera arrangements held up anyway, which is the thing people doubted about a Savatage without him on a stage.
The album Hall of the Mountain King is the one that moved the band from a club act into the records people still argue about, and it turns forty in 2027.
