Unleashed covered Countess Bathory at Gagarin 205 in Athens on 7 October, six days after Cronos's death was announced. It exists as fan filmed video, which is how most things of this kind survive.
Johnny Hedlund had already written something on 2 October, and it is more useful than most tributes because it is a sequence rather than a sentiment. First the LP carried home from the record store, Welcome To Hell, which struck him as hardcore punk played as metal with real attitude. Then Black Metal, and still no chance to see them live.
Then the part that mattered. A few years later a VHS copy of a show at the Hammersmith Odeon reached him, and he remembers thinking that if he ever became a musician and formed a band, he wanted to be a frontman exactly like that: the presence, the aggression, the sheer power straight at the audience.
He has fronted Unleashed since 1989 doing a version of that, and in Athens he played the song back. The message ended with thanks and with see you in Valhalla, which from this particular band is not a figure of speech.
