Whitechapel have released a video for Bedlam, from Hymns In Dissonance, and Phil Bozeman has explained what the song is doing.
It belongs to a character who first appeared on This Is Exile in 2008. Craig is the cult leader's brother, the one who was not chosen, and Bozeman says this song is him admitting the jealousy and then defiling his brother's corpse because of it.
The detail that makes it unpleasant rather than merely gory is the point of view. The dead brother is still in there. He can feel and hear everything and cannot move, and the song is told from both sides of that at once.
Eighteen years of writing inside one invented family is unusual in any genre and almost unheard of in this one, where most lyrics are disposable. It is also why the band's audience reads the words.
They turn twenty this month and mark it with a North American run from Atlanta on 11 November to Knoxville on 19 December, with Chelsea Grin and The Acacia Strain, then Europe in January with Sylosis. A Visceral Retch came from the same record.
