Zao played Liberate Te Ex Inferis from beginning to end at Furnace Fest on 4 October last year, and the whole performance is now online in 4K, put out with the Monokill channel.

The record is from 1999, which places it in the short window where metalcore had not yet settled into a template. Zao were doing something with dissonance and with Daniel Weyandt's voice that the bands who followed mostly did not attempt, and the album is the one people point at when they argue the genre used to be stranger.

Playing it whole is a different proposition from putting two of its songs in a set. The sequencing was built to be heard in order, and the parts that work least well on their own are the ones that make sense in the middle of it.

The quality of the release matters here too. Full set footage from a festival normally survives as a handful of phone clips, and a 4K multi camera version of a complete album performance is the sort of thing that becomes the reference recording by default.

The set was filmed at Furnace Fest in Birmingham, Alabama.
